Speaker Cable Comparison

Speaker cable comparison’s can be difficult. To make things easy, I have compiled this page to help with any confusion.

I have two copper speaker cables, the litz cables (SL) are intended for high efficiency speakers with simpler crossovers and single driver speakers, although they may work well on less-efficient multi-way speakers that have non-reactive crossovers, these speakers also usually play well with tube amplifiers. The character of the litz cables is incredibly clean and precise, with minimal warmth and amazing accuracy for a copper cable. These cables almost always beat out silver speaker cables that use lower purity (4N) silver and silver plated copper cables. The multi-stranded copper cables (SMC) are made with multiple runs of 24 gauge upocc copper in teflon insulation using a proprietary combination of twisting and braiding. The larger gauge conductors are suitable for speakers requiring a lot of current, so low impedance and low sensitivity multi-way speakers. They are also slightly smoother, warmer and more forgiving than the SL litz cables, which is a better match for many multi-way speakers that have ribbon, ceramic or metal drivers, but since they are made with genuine Neotech upocc copper they perform on a level much higher than ordinary copper cables and are a better choice than 4N silver or silver plated copper cables.

I also have 2 silver speaker cables, one pure UPOCC silver (SMS) and the other a UPOCC silver/gold alloy (SMSG), which is my OEM product and is made exclusively for me by Neotech. The SMS cables are very clean, transparent and neutral, making them an ideal choice as a reference cable. They do not add warmth as copper cables do, which in turn allows for more detail and resolution. These cables, while not inexpensive, are a real bargain compared to most upocc silver speaker cables, which tend to sell for over $5k. I also offer more gauges than most companies, so if you have a more efficient speaker I can make a cable with higher gauge, saving you a lot of money. UPOCC metals do not require as low of a gauge as other conductors because they have a complete lack of grain boundaries, which makes them sound louder and clearer compared to other conductors. The SMSG cables take the positive attributes of upocc silver and add an improved tone and density to the images along with better dynamics. Pure silver is so clean and transparent it can make the tone and harmonics sound a little thin, while the silver/gold alloy has an amazing realism to the tone and sonic images in your soundstage, and it accomplishes this with no compromise. The silver/gold alloy metal is quite a bit more expensive than upocc silver, which is already one of the most expensive conductors in the world to manufacture, but this allows me to offer what is likely one of the best speaker cables on the market regardless of price. The SMSG speaker cables, along with the D4 interconnect cables, are on the cutting edge of cable technology and are meant to offer the very best available. There are lots of choices of upocc silver cables but the silver/gold alloy is my exclusive product and represents a significant improvement over most companies top of the line cables.

SL Speaker Cable

These cables are made using a 4 strand litz-braid geometry of Neotech UPOCC copper litz wire in 20 and 14 gauges. The SL cables are available in 17, 14 and 11 gauge. The 17g cable is made of 4 strands of 20g wire, the 14g cable uses 8 strands of 20g wire, and the 11g cable uses 4 strands of 14g wire. The wires are constructed using multiple 44g upocc copper wires that are individually insulated with a thin coat of enamel and braided around a flat film core in such a way that the individual strands of wire share the same position in the bundle as every other wire, there is no inner or outer wires in the braid. The 14g upocc copper litz wire is made of 1060 strands of this 44g wire! The wire is constructed in this way to eliminate skin effect, where the higher frequencies travel closer to the surface of the wire, and was originally used for RF transmission applications. This results in a clearer sound when used for audio, reducing the amount of warmth and coloration imparted by copper conductors. The result is a cable that performs at a higher level than most copper speaker cables, performing at a level closer to silver, but without the typical harshness and thin sound associated with lower quality silver wire. These cables consistently perform at a higher level vs 4N silver speaker cables and are more affordable for the same gauge. This makes these cables a very good value for the money and the next best thing to my upocc silver and silver/gold alloy cables. In short, clean, clear, detailed and accurate. Very neutral, with no emphasis on any particular frequency range. Adds absolutely no harshness.

SMC Speaker Cables

 Description:

 These cables are made with multiple strands of 24 gauge upocc copper in teflon insulation, and are intended for lower-efficiency multi-way speakers that require high currents and voltages to drive them to reasonable listening levels. For these type of speakers this cable is a better choice than the SL, or copper litz speaker cables. The SMC cables use multiple 24g wires to build the cable while the SL cables use 44g wires. Sometimes, even with thousands of strands of 44g wire, speakers that require a lot of current would rather see the much thicker stranding of this cable vs the litz cable. It’s not quite as clean as the litz cable, but the sonics of this cable are on the warmer and smoother side, they will add no harshness whatsoever. This cable is also a good choice for those who would like a fuller, warmer sound vs a more accurate cleaner sound of my copper litz cables. Most frequently, it turns out this is the case for many lower-efficiency multi-way speakers.

SMSG Speaker Cable

Description:

These cables are made with multiple strands of 26 gauge occ silver/gold alloy with teflon insulation, and are intended for systems requiring a reference-level cable. This is the same cable as the SMS Speaker Cable, but uses the occ silver/gold alloy instead of pure silver. This results in a cable with exceptionally realistic tone and harmonics, while retaining all the positive qualities of upocc silver. The occ silver/gold alloy I use in these cables is made exclusively for me by Neotech, and in this application is higher performing that the version Neotech offers to the general public. As far as I know, I am the only vendor offering interconnect and speaker cables made with this alloy wire at this time, which is double the price of upocc silver and is by far the best wire for audio use I have ever tested. This cable paired with my D4 interconnect represents the cutting edge of cable technology and performance available today, and while not inexpensive it is still a very good value for those looking for a cable with the best performance available.
